Is the farmers market open this Saturday in Brunswick? Ask five people who live here and you might get five different answers, and at least two of them will be wrong for the exact same reason: they are all thinking of one market, when Mary Ross Waterfront Park actually hosts two.

Neither one runs every week. Both run often enough that most residents assume they are the same thing. And the confusion is not just an online rumor. Visitor reviews for the park describe driving well out of their way on a Thursday afternoon expecting vendors and finding an empty pavilion, or showing up on what they thought was market day and hearing from someone nearby that the schedule had changed to weekends only. The park's own listings do not always agree with each other either, with older tourism pages still citing hours that no longer apply.

Here is what is actually happening, and why it matters more than a scheduling footnote if you live within walking distance of Bay Street.

Two Organizations, One Park, No Overlap

The Brunswick Harbor Market runs the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturday of every month, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., organized through the Downtown Development Authority and Main Street Brunswick. It leans toward a broad mix of vendors: produce alongside boiled peanuts, baked goods, prepared food, and handmade crafts, the kind of market where you can grab breakfast and browse in the same trip.

The Forward Brunswick Farmer's Market runs the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., organized separately through Forward Brunswick. It is the tighter, more produce-focused of the two, built around homegrown fruits, vegetables, and jarred goods from local growers.

Neither market's own materials mention the other by name. If you find one page while searching, you will assume it is the market, full stop, and plan your Saturday around a schedule that only tells half the story.

What August 2026 Actually Looks Like

August has five Saturdays this year, which means every single one carries a market at Mary Ross Waterfront Park, split cleanly between the two organizers:

That fifth Saturday is worth noting on its own. The Harbor Market's own schedule only claims the 5th Saturday "if there is one" in a given month, which most months there isn't. August 2026 is one of the rarer months where it lands, so the run of three straight Harbor Market Saturdays this month is not the usual rhythm. Come September, with only four Saturdays, the split reverts to two and two.

The pattern holds in every ordinary month regardless of how many Saturdays it has: 1st and 3rd belong to Harbor Market, 2nd and 4th belong to Forward Brunswick. Together they cover every Saturday of the year at that park. Neither market advertises that fact, because from inside either organization's calendar, there is no reason to. It only becomes visible when you look at both schedules side by side, which almost nobody trying to plan a Saturday morning actually does.

Friday Night Is the Other Half of the Rhythm

Saturday mornings are not the only fixed point downtown. First Friday runs monthly, 5 to 9 p.m., along Newcastle, Gloucester, G, and Bay Streets, with a farmer's market set up in Queen Square, live music in Jekyll Square, and local crafts in Machen Square. The next one lands August 7, 2026, confirmed on the Downtown Development Authority's own calendar.

That means most weeks in Brunswick actually give you two separate downtown outings rather than one: a Friday evening street event and a Saturday morning market, run by different organizers, on different blocks, with different vendors. Treating them as a single blurry "downtown thing happening this weekend" is how people end up in the wrong place at the wrong hour, the same mistake that trips up first-time visitors looking for the Saturday market on a Tuesday.

First Friday also puts you within a block or two of some of downtown's steadier fixtures. Richland Rum distills out of a restored late-1800s building on Newcastle Street, complete with a balcony overlooking downtown and hand-hammered copper stills producing nine different rum expressions, and the Downtown Development Authority marked its third anniversary in the district earlier this year. A few doors down, Cunningham Jewelers has been open since 1916, when Robert Cunningham bought the store from Rothschild's, making it the oldest continuously running business in historic downtown Brunswick.

The food scene around those anchors keeps adding names. Schroeder's Market on Gloucester Street operates as a specialty food market and eatery guided by James Beard Award-winning cookbook author Chef Keith Schroeder, run day to day by the mother-daughter team of Nicki and Madison Schroeder. Pip's Candy and Crafted Sodas opened at 504 Gloucester Street, a custom soda shop concept owner Shaun Kirkwood brought from the West Coast after relocating to town. And a downtown location of St. Simons Crepes now serves ten sweet crepe options under business partner Sal Stanys, giving the corridor another reason to linger between market stops.

Before You Plan Around Any Single Date

Even the marquee annual event on this same lawn can move. The 2026 Brunswick Rockin' Stewbilee was originally set for January 31, then pushed to February 28 due to weather, according to both the event's own site and coverage in The Brunswick News. If a stew festival with a car show, a 5K, and thousands of attendees can shift by four weeks, a routine Saturday market schedule is not something worth assuming from memory or an old bookmark.

The most reliable move is the boring one: check the Downtown Development Authority's own event calendar before you head down, especially around holiday weekends when either market has been known to shift or skip. It is the one source that gets updated when a date changes, rather than the review sites and tourism pages that quietly go stale.

None of this changes what Mary Ross Waterfront Park actually offers on a good Saturday, produce and baked goods early, a view of the shrimp boats and cargo ships working the river, the Liberty Ship Memorial marking the city's shipbuilding history, and a downtown corridor that rewards showing up more than once a month rather than treating it as a single stop to check off. It just means knowing which Saturday you are walking into, and why it looks different from the one before it.
