Shrimp & Grits Weekend on Jekyll Is Free. The Causeway Gate Is Where It Costs You

Admission to the 2026 Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival costs nothing. It runs Friday, October 23, from 4 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., across the Historic District. Driving a car through the causeway gate on either of those days costs $15, which is $5 more than any ordinary Tuesday.

For a weekend that draws more than 45,000 people onto 32 acres, how you arrive is the cost that adds up. If you already live on the island or drive over from Brunswick or St. Simons a few times a month, your festival weekend can run anywhere from $0 to $30 before the first bowl of grits. It all depends on what is on your windshield or under your feet.

Your Gate Fee Depends on How You Arrive

The Jekyll Island Authority runs the island as a state park, and every vehicle entering pays a fee. That fee pays for roads, grounds, picnic areas, landscaping, conservation and public safety, because Jekyll does not get state operating dollars the way other Georgia state parks do. The Authority's board approved the current rates effective July 1, 2023, and the same vote added a $5 surcharge on designated event days.

How you get in Friday only Both days Notes
Daily pass, standard vehicle $15 $30 $10 on non-event days; good until midnight
Daily pass, vehicle over 8 feet tall $20 $40 $15 base rate plus the $5 event surcharge
Annual pass, standard vehicle $0 that weekend $0 that weekend $100 a year, with no event-day increase
Bicycle or on foot $0 $0 No charge at the entry gate

The surcharge is also why the annual pass is worth a look before October 23. At the standard $10 rate, $100 covers ten visits. The Authority currently lists three surcharge occasions: Independence Day, the Shrimp & Grits Festival and Holly Jolly Jekyll, with more dates to be announced. Holly Jolly Jekyll comes back November 27, 2026, and runs through January 3, 2027. That puts the next round of $15 gate days only about a month after this festival, so a household that drives over for both events can get close to the break-even point within a single fall season.

The annual pass comes with a few conditions worth knowing ahead of time:

  • It covers one specific vehicle, registered by make, model and license plate.
  • You can move it to a temporary vehicle, such as a rental or a loaner, up to six times a year. The transfer has to be done online before you reach the gate.
  • A bike rack or trailer that blocks your plate can keep the reader from recognizing it. The lane has a HELP/INTERCOM button, and staff are available around the clock.

The Authority's discount list is short. It includes disabled veterans, who receive a free annual pass for one vehicle, College of Coastal Georgia students who register each semester, State of Georgia government vehicles, and public school buses carrying students. Island residents are not on that list, so a resident paying daily in a standard vehicle pays the same $15 event-day rate as any visitor.

The Free Way In Has Pedals

The parking page is direct about this. Bicycles and pedestrians come through the entry gate at no charge. The island has more than 24 miles of paths and trails, and the Authority posts separate maps for the whole island, Beach Village and the Historic District.

From Beach Village, the Historic District Trail is roughly a two-mile link between the North Loop and the Oceanview Trail. That estimate comes from an independent trail guide last updated in September 2025, so check it against the Authority's 2026 maps before you plan a ride around it. The same guide traces a causeway approach over the Thompson Memorial Bridge that meets the Historic District Trail at Riverview Drive.

The official festival information does not mention bike parking. Its advice for getting around inside the grounds is to walk and to wear comfortable shoes. If you ride, bring a lock and expect to find your own spot at the edge of the crowd.

A few other ways in are worth knowing:

  • Accessible parking is at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, 214 Stable Road. Show the attendant a government-issued placard or plate. The shuttle fleet includes accessible buses and attendants.
  • Airport shuttles stop at the Mosaic Museum, across the street from the Artists Market.
  • Hotel shuttles run straight to the festival entrance from many on-island hotels.
  • Pets are better left at home, according to the Authority, because the pathways get crowded.

Half the Prime Kitchens Are a Bike Ride Away

The festival's prime food vendors are the restaurants serving its namesake dish. Half of the 2026 roster cooks on Jekyll the rest of the year.

On Jekyll

  • Coastal Cucina, 1175 N. Beachview Drive, at Villas by the Sea. The resort's dining page lists daily hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Wee Pub Beach, 20 Main Street, Unit 100, in Beach Village. The kitchen is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Zachry's Riverhouse, 1 Harbor Road.

From St. Simons and Brunswick

  • Del Sur Artisan Eats, 321 Mallery Street, St. Simons Island.
  • Halyard Restaurant Group, whose current lineup is Halyards at 55 Cinema Lane, Tramici at 75 Cinema Lane, La Plancha at 3600 Frederica Road and AGIO Italian & Steak at 124 Glynco Parkway in Brunswick.

From Savannah

So a festival plate from Wee Pub Beach or Coastal Cucina is a preview of a dinner you can have on any regular weeknight, with your annual pass or your bike. The official page lists the vendors but not their dishes or prices, so menus will be a surprise on the day.

Fifteen food trucks round out the lineup: BJ Events Greek Food Express, Coastal Creamery & Pretzels, Famous Funnel Cakes, Firefly Crafts, Kayes Mini Doughnuts, Keller Wood Fire Pizza, Lowcountry Lobster, Mexicali Fresh, Smoke Kings BBQ, Smokin Flame Fantasy, The Loaded Lemon, Venturing Crew 369, Voodoo Shrimp Shack, Willyum's and Yoodi, Inc. ATMs will be set up around the grounds.

Two Stages, One Porch

The second stage is the front porch of the Skeet House on Pier Road, right in the middle of the Artists Market. The building went up in the 1930s for Jekyll Island Club recreation and was later moved piece by piece to its current spot, where it hosts educational programs and entertainment the rest of the year.

Because the porch stage sits inside the Artists Market, you can browse booths such as 4 Pelicans Woodworking, A Tail of Two Yarns, Ashley Carter Art & Sea Glass and Blue Descent Photography without losing the music.

Friday, October 23

Time Main Stage Skeet House Stage
4–6 p.m. Backbeat Blvd. Scott Pallot, 4–5:30
5:45–7:15 p.m. Andy Johnson
6:30–7:15 p.m. 14K GOLD Band
7:30–9 p.m. The Tams Blossomin' Bone

The fireworks go up Friday at around 7:15 p.m., at the end of the 14K GOLD Band set and just before The Tams take the Main Stage. Friday's gates open at 4 p.m., so if you are coming home from work, one daily pass gets you a five-hour evening with dinner, fireworks and a headliner.

Saturday, October 24

On the Main Stage, Hot Banana Coffee opens at 10 a.m., followed by The Rider Band at 11:50, The Young Americans at 1:40, Idle Hands at 3:30, Squirt Gun at 5:30 and Chris Taylor & the Rumor from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Skeet House porch keeps a tighter schedule: Eddie Pickett at 10, Michaele Hannemann at 11, Joe King at 12:45, Alex Bevin at 2:30, Paul Ivey at 4:15, The Carpetbaggers at 6 and Ted Stuckey from 7:45 to 9 p.m.

The Gate Calendar Keeps Going After the Festival

After the festival, the next items on Jekyll's calendar run on the same gate. The Cold-Stunned Plunge is November 28 at Beach Village and benefits the Georgia Sea Turtle Center's cold-stun rehabilitation work. In-person registration is $35 until the price goes up after November 19, and you have to register by October 26 to be guaranteed a 2026 shirt. Holly Jolly Jekyll begins the day before, November 27, and that is one of the listed $5 surcharge occasions.

Buying an annual pass online now covers your festival weekend, the plunge and the holiday season on one $100 receipt. If you would rather pay as you go, two festival days by car cost $30.

If you love Jekyll weekends like this one and have started wondering about having a place on the island, I'd be glad to talk it through over a bowl of shrimp and grits. Lori Lynn can explain how island homes work, from leasehold details to how often a gate pass really gets used. Let's Connect.
